Status: Getting started with HRDD
You play an essential role in the seafood supply chain by sitting between raw production and buyers. Since you often employ workers in your production facilities, you can set an example for how to protect and promote human rights as an employer. You can also set standards for producers in your supply chain. By implementing practices to uphold worker rights and directly engage with workers within your facilities, you can have an outsized impact on human rights and labor conditions.
Setting expectations and goals is an essential component of human rights due diligence (HRDD). Start by identifying senior level staff members who will be responsible for developing and implementing your HRDD program.
The Embed step in the Roadmap is a good place to start to develop your program. It includes a background on human rights in seafood, information on how to develop HRDD goals and timelines, and guidance on implementing human rights programs with your administrative staff. The Embed step also includes direct advice and guidance to begin developing your program, such as:
- Review and update decision-making and business practices that support your commitments and commit to HRDD as an ongoing process.
- Work with your executive leadership and legal teams to ensure that their understanding of identified human rights practices and requirements align with international standards and industry best practices.
- Budget for and implement staff training and integrate human rights accountabilities and performance indicators into employee job responsibilities.
- Train employee teams to incorporate HRDD activities and your company policies into their day-to-day work.
